I didn’t mean to do anything bad!

Charles laughed and gave her a kiss.

It didn’t take long to find Dad’s car keys. Charles headed straight for the spot where he’d last seen Lucy sniffing. He dug around in a loose pile of dirt under a rosebush. “Ta-daa!” he cried, holding up the keys a moment later.

“Well done, Charles,” said Dad. “Looks like you were absolutely right about Lucy.”

“Now for my glasses,” said Mom.

They roamed all over the backyard, poking into every pile of dirt they could find. After a while, Mom threw up her hands. “I don’t think they’re out here,” she said.

The back door slammed. “What are you guys doing?” Lizzie stared at them from the back deck. She laughed when Charles explained.

“I don’t happen to think it’s very funny.” Mom wiped a smear of dirt from her nose. “In fact, I’m beginning to hope that we find a home for that thieving puppy very, very soon.”

Lizzie joined in the hunt. “It’s not Lucy’s fault,” she said, as she dug around near the old swing set. “Some dogs are diggers, just like Labs like to fetch and border collies like to herd. It’s in her genes. Plus, she’s probably insecure because of losing her home and family. Once she feels more settled in, she’ll probably stop stealing things.”

“Whether it’s her fault or not,” said Mom, “that dog is not allowed to be out in the backyard on her own anymore. When she needs to go out, one of you is going to have to take her on a leash.”

“Fine,” said Charles.

“Hey,” said Lizzie. “Look what I found.” She held up a pair of glasses, all covered with dirt.

Mom rushed over. “Oh, thank goodness,” she said. She took the glasses and went inside to wash them off.

“Now, what about Mr. Duck?” Lizzie asked, hands on her hips.

It wasn’t until after dinner that night that Buddy’s toy turned up. It was the Bean who found it, hidden deep beneath one of the sofa cushions. “Duckie!” he yelled, pulling him out and waving him in the air. Buddy came bounding over for a happy reunion with his favorite toy.
